Decent sushi at best. It probably is the best sushi in town but Stevens Point isn't exactly the sushi capital. With no other decent sushi place to compare this to, you are getting a lot of locals overhyping this place because of the lack of something better. Also, because it is the best of only less than a handful of sushi places in town, their prices are high. They charge like they are in a metropolitan area which would be fine if the quality and selection matched that of a downtown sushi restaurant in Chicago or the twin cities, but it doesn't. Don't get me wrong, it's good, but five stars it is not.

My Wausau friends notified me of this opportunity to get great sushi in Stevens Point like what we remembered in a now closed place in Wausau, so I had to try it out with them. I've tried several rolls with each of us getting a different roll each time - all have been excellent (Carnation Roll, Godzilla Roll, & Chicago Roll) . Ambiance looks like it is not feng shui, as it casually applies to interior decorating, but that is totally fine. Knowledgeable wait staff. Each time I ask questions, I understand more about each roll and I've never been disappointed by their suggestions. Check out the pictures.

They've expanded! Food is still delicious. My friends drive from Wausau (45 minutes away) just to eat sushi here. Service is fast and friendly.

We drive from Wausau anytime we want sushi because this place just ruined us for any other sushi. So good! I have tried sushi from many different places and matsu ya beats them all. Incredibly delicious food and decently priced as well, nice staff and good atmosphere for date night. Cannot recommend this place enough! Order the sushi pizza!! You will not be disappointed!

Love their food, I've tried various dishes and I pretty much love them all, my most favorite's the sashimi. My boyfriend and I try to visit there once a month, best sushi place in the area and I'm quite experienced with sushi and sashimi so I know what I'm talking about when it comes to this type of dishes.

This is a statement...I live on Miami beach and I'm from New York City and this is the most impressive sushi I've had from either cities. This is nobu quality sashimi and in the middle of Wisconsin.

Absolutely perfect sushi each and every time. I have probably eaten here about 50 times from dine in to take out sushi on a road trip and it has NEVER left me unhappy in the least. Their sushi is genuine authentic sushi with nothing but the best of quality ingredients. Be sure to try one of their monthly specials on your next trip! Staff are always courteous and spot on as well as their seating and decor. Lovely place for a large group of 8+ or a nice romantic dinner for 2. Thursday through Saturday nights 5-7pm I would highly suggest a reservation as they are always busy! HUGE TIP: although they have a monthly special - ask your server to review their box of past specials and the sushi chefs can make one for you! If you wanted their December special roll in August - just ask.

I frequently travel through the area but rarely stop in Stevens Point, I happen to be staying in town tonight and wanted to try one of the local places. This location was very highly rated so I gave it a shot! I like sushi well enough to attempt to make it at home myself, so I feel I have a pretty high expectation for sushi. This is probably one of the top three or four places I've ever been to! The Monster roll was fantastic and the Geisha roll was outstanding! The only downside was they don't take American Express, which might make me skip traveling for business and stopping in. If that isn't an issue for you I would definitely recommend!

Be cautious, I really don't think this place deserves such high ratings. Why is this placed packed? I hate to think I have become a sushi snob, but maybe I have. I went on a recommendation from a family member. I was told the sushi was worth going for. Nope, that was not the case. We showed up around 7-ish, and the place was packed. We were seated at the sushi bar, and told it would take close to an hour to get our rolls. It did. And when they came, it was served with a heaping side of disappointment. Nothing was fresh. The fish, we got a variety, was dry; as if it had sat uncovered for a day or so. Even the most basic rolls were covered in mystery sauce. The ginger was wilted and soggy. I tried each roll, bit could not bring myself to delve any further. My wife had one roll and stopped. Luckily, neither of us ended up in the ER. Needless to say, we will not be returning.

I've been here only once, and it was for a few to-go lunch specials, so I know there's still way more I need to try. If sushi wasn't a supposed no-no during pregnancy, I'd have been back many times, believe me! Their online menu isn't the most informative, so I waited until I got there to order, and the woman running take-out was so helpful in explaining the different rolls available in the lunch special. I think I ended up picking 6 different ones so my husband and I could split them all and have a little of everything. Everything was great! I just don't know why I keep ordering lunch specials. After 3 rolls, there's really not room left for a salad and soup, so next time I'll definitely try some different items from the menu and skip the special. I'm lucky to have found a legit sushi spot here in Point!

A little pricey. But the food is worth it. Only downfall is that it was so busy. So I won't doc points for that. I want more sushi and saki now

  • Eva H.

YUM! Yummy, presentable, Great selection. The server was delightful. Portions are huge. Pros - the Apple Saki Yu-u-ummy, tasted like a Jolly Rancher. the "Christmas in July" was a mile long but tasty and filling, a little kick to it. Mio saki came in a bottle, what you can't finish you take home. LOVE it. They played all my favorite songs (Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Eagles etc) Con - They don't take American Express Tip: Ask for the box to look through the special recipes. If I'm ever in town again I will take the crew here for sure. I might try the Lovey Dovey. Highly recommend. I'm from CA and I know sushi.

Good price. High quality sushi. Fast lunch even though they were super busy. Only thing I would change is to have a little bit more decor. ..but that's a not picky thing. Will be back.

This is my favorite sushi place in Wisconsin. We have had fantastic luck getting great meals on Saturday night without waiting. Sushi is always excellent and fresh.

This is our favorite restaurant. Always, always great sushi and really amazing staff. We brought a party of 15 in and our server never even blinked. She was calm, friendly and efficient the whole evening. The food is consistantly excellent. On weekend evenings you may want to reserve a table as they are always full. I highly recommend this place!

  • Matt M.

Excellent food! No need for a meal if you have a couple rolls. The salmon was not grilled as well as we like it but the vegetables with it were excellent. Always fresh tasting and filling! Expanded dining area a plus. Call ahead for a larger group. It's not as busy earlier in the evening but it fills up.

I've been to dozens of different Sushi restaurants over the years and I keep coming back to Matsu's. I have always had a great experience, each month are new specials to try (which you can order even after new specials replace the old), and the service is good too. Cho cho, graduation, and Christmas in July are mind-blowing good and worth a try. Everyplace else seems subpar by comparison.

  • Angi M.

LOVE eating here!! We come as often as we can. The food and atmosphere are amazing. Sometimes the service is a little slower than I expect, but I don't let it bother me too much because the food is just sooooo gooooood!!

Seriously the best sushi place ive had in the area. I am from California and lived in Vegas for a while so I've had awesome quality sushi, and this is seriously good. I never thought i would like sushi from central Wisconsin, but this place proved me wrong. If you're 21+ TRY LYCHEE SAKE!

    (5)
  • Erin L.

Good sushi for the central Wisconsin area. I'm a big fan of their food along with the atmosphere inside the restaurant. I recommend this place over Tokyo Steakhouse though it is farther for students to get to. It is a good 'date' place.

  • River S.

We love this place but think it's ridiculous they are closed on Sunday! How about reduced hours?... Just serve dinner.

  • Luke F.

First I found great sushi in Blaine, MN (shameless plug for Hajime) and now Stevens Point, WI. What the heck did I do before Yelp? This place is legit and try the "g" sake if you like junmai. Go Packers!

  • XL V.

We always enjoy going here. The food is good and the service is friendly. They're quick and accommodating. Their udon noodle soup is great and their sushi is really good too!

  • Captain P.

I've never had a bad experience here. The waitstaff is usually quite quick, the sushi is fresh and delicious, and the atmosphere is great. They offer the option to tip the sushi chef's, which I appreciate since they do great work. Their sashimi is great-recommended for anyone who likes a little "kick". Hands down one of my favorite sushi places, and the best one in Stevens Point.

On our last vacation to southern California we ate at 4 sushi bars...this place beat them all, hands down. We have had sushi here nearly a two dozen times and loved it every time. The only other place I like sushi this much is at home..... my wife makes the most wonderful sushi!

Great place to quench your sushi thirst in Wausau area. Lunch or dinner this place is full and thats says how good they are. My only favorite in Point. Thanks to my roomie who suggested me this place.

Hands down the best sushi I have ever had! I have been here dozens of times and have never been dissapointed. I drive 100 miles round trip to enjoy this place as often as possible. Ive tried sushi from coast to coast, Vegas and from tropical islands...this sushi remains the BEST!

Matsu Ya is a great sushi place located off of Main Street/ Hwy 10. They consistently have great sushi and my favorite is the Spicy Californian roll. Hours: Mon 11am - 9:30pm Tue 11am - 9:30pm Wed 11am - 9:30pm Thu 11am - 9:30pm Fri 11am - 10pm Sat 11am - 10pm Sun Closed

Certainly one of the best places to get sushi or sashimi. (Unusual for a smaller town, but one of the highlights of Stevens Point.) They offer non sushi items as well. Everything is consistently fresh and prepared well. An instant favorite for guests I bring here as well. Positives: -Fresh food -Cosy atmosphere -Sushi chefs are professional and well-trained. -Dishes are well prepared and relatively authentic. Cons: -Last few times I've visited, the servers haven't been the best. Very slow and inattentive. -Host/Hostess' had a similar attitude. While picking up a "to-go" order, the cashier gave me the wrong price on the telephone, and when I inquired, she picked up the receipt and threw it in front of me without saying a word. (I feel this is specific to these people, and my experience has always been great other than this. Hopefully the managers take note and make detail on customer service training.)

This is sushi that rivals the stuff we got in Hawaii. This is incredible, considering we've got it in central WI.

Very tasty sushi. Wasn't expecting something this good hidden up in Stevens Point. Reasonably priced lunch specials, with a good variety of choices.

I generally dont like sushi, however my friend wanted to eat here and all i got to say is delicious! I tried the deep fried shushi with cream cheese, crab, eel more...wish i remember the name if it. I would go there again. Friendly staff, clean good place to hang out. No complaints.

Really good sushi. There was 6 of us so we ordered a variety. Liked every one of them.

This was my first time eating sushi. I only tried some vegetable ones and they were fantastic. I loved it. I also tried the hibachi chicken. It was also very good. We went on a Friday night and it was busy. As a result the service was not very fast.

    Best sushi in central Wisconsin!

  • Troy J.

Central Wisconsin + Sushi? I had my doubts, but Matsu Ya delivers. They have complete sushi offerings, but they're best known AND LOVED for their rolls. They have many creative, flavorful, and memorable variations. The decor here is bland, but the servers are friendly. Let your server know what you like and they'll help you select something memorable.

Always a great meal, I would recommend over and over again.

  • Mel F.

If you like sushi, this is the place for you. If you don't they try to pawn it off on you anyway. I ordered a teriyaki chicken, lunch version. The chicken was overcooked and the portion was small, apparently so they could include two sushi rolls, which the waitress never mentioned were part of the lunch special she talked me into. These people need to recognize that not everyone who stops in is a sushi fan.

Was in town for a wedding and craving sushi. I'm skeptical of restaurants that don't specialize in one cuisine and try to serve every kind of Asian food they can think of, so Matsu Ya was the natural choice. We mainly got special rolls so I can't comment on the quality of their plain fish, but the rolls were fun. Generous portions and cheaper than I'm used to. Rolls skewed towards the baked, fried, and cream cheesed. Is this illustrative of the Midwest? Overall, pretty standard in my sushi experience, but it gets four stars for the crazy nice staff (the Midwest stereotypes are true!) and serving fresh fish so far from the ocean.

Matsu Ya's sushi makes me oh so very happy. Every single roll I have tried here has been phenomenal . I really enjoy their Christmas in July roll (which unfortunately is only a special in July, so hurry and try it!) and their Godzilla roll. Their prices are also VERY reasonable for the amount of sushi you get. I will be eating here all the time while I'm in the Stevens Point area!

Very big fan of Matsu Ya. They have great service and everything is very fresh. Tempura is well done. The Sushi is often very creative, well prepared and you can tell this is a very clean place. My GF and I always stop here when I am working in Central WI or we are going back home for the weekend.

Came here for dinner tonight. Had the Snow White roll and a salad. Salad was a tiny bowl of iceberg lettuce with 1/4 lettuce and 3/4 dressing. The Snow White roll was excellent! Great sushi; wish I had room to order more. The waitress was nice but overwhelming; asked if I was ready to order before even sitting down or opening the menu! Maybe she was bored...

Clean, modern looking place located in a strip mall. Stopped in for lunch Saturday and had the Tempura Shrimp bento box. Lots of food, started with a salad and meso soup. Not a big fan of seaweed salad (plain iceburg lettuce with lots of dressing on top) but the meso had good flavor. The bento box came with tempura shrimp and vegetables, pork dumplings (3), California roll (4 pcs.) and a bed of steamed rice (?), all for $7.95. The shrimp and tempura veggies were good. I wasn't sure what to do with the rice, it just didn't seem to fit with this meal. The California roll was just ok. I really need to try some their specialty rolls to get a good read on the sushi here. The wife had the chicken Katsu which was a bit over-cooked and slightly dry. I would definitely go back, since it's hard to shine with just lunch and the place seems to have it all together otherwise.

Extremely friendly staff, very helpful. DELICIOUS sushi, the best you can get in central Wisconsin. It's a small dining area, so be prepared to be close to the other guests dining in. Awesome lunch specials!

Didn't expect such great sushi in Stevens Point. It was delicious. So many choices and reasonable for two giant dudes out enjoying dinner. If your hungry for Japanese in SP, definitely get to this place.

My wife drove buy last week on the way back to Wausau. She mentioned that there is a Sushi Bar on the east side of Stevens Point (east of I-39). We decided to check it out one evening. We are very glad we did: excellent. A small place but the ambiance is quite nice. Certainly it isn't elegant. We had both the Godzilla roll and the Brewer's Roll: very good to excellent. We also tried the Spicy California Roll which was excellent. I had to get 1 piece of the calamari sushi: fabulous and fresh tasting. CJ, our server, was attentive and offered very good advice as to what to try. I talked briefly with the Chinese couple who own the place: seem like very nice people. I definitely will go back! Good for small groups. I know that they have wine and beer; I'm not sure about other categories of drink.

Pretty good sushi, good service. Basic rolls are rather plain and bland, but their special rolls are good. Some can be rather pricy.

This is the only place in Central WI I would get sushi from. Their specials are excellent (I love the Pink Panther roll!) and extremely reasonably priced. There are a wide range of rolls on their regular menu as well (for everyone from the nervous first-timer to a sushi veteran). The only downside is it gets really busy on weekend (Thu-Sat) nights, so you should make a reservation if you want to eat at a particular time.

Love it! My wife & i love to dine here. Great beer and wine selections. Tony & Angel do a great job. A very attentive waitstaff. Killer sushi!!! Priced very reasonably. Great rolls! The Golden Armor Roll is the bomb! They will make it even if not on the menu. Get reservations for Thursday and Friday nite to make sure you can sit

Best sushi bar in the area. Try the Uni when in season. Yummy!

  • Michelle H.

My boyfriend and I go there almost every time I'm in Stevens Point. The staff is friendly, and the food, tea, and sake are so delicious! We've never had a bad meal there. It is cheaper to go for lunch than for dinner.

  • Roxann B.

Wow, what a great meal. Went with a friend after a movie and we had such a good time! The staff is friendly and very knowledgeable. A very large variety and I can't wait to go there again to try even more things. I had the squid tempura and the Crazy Crunchy roll and was very happy and very full. Was really nice to see a wide variety of people in there, enjoying the food. Definitely a must if you like sushi or any Japanese food.

This was a very nice surprise in the middle of Wisconsin. Who would have thought that you could get not only good, but very good sushi in Stevens Point Wisconsin. Certainly not a tourist mecca or a large city I can tell you that the percentage of great restaurants to poor ones is skewed to the good here. This one was so good that we came twice in two days and ordered different rolls each time. This was a friendly place with good prompt service and while I find that important, the food is what really matters. They did not disappoint here. I had a green salad to start. Of course it had the Japanese flair with ginger dressing that looked like french but it was oinion-ey and ginger. While the salad was fresh, it was just a salad but the dressing was very good and it made it a great appy. We had a bunch of rolls but a couple of the favorites were the Godzilla roll with shrimp tempura, cream cheese, scallions, two kinds of masago and wasabi mayo. This was good enough that we had to order another one. We also really enjoyed the Red dragon roll. It had crab meat, cream cheese, avocado, tuna and baked with special sauce and tempura flakes. Some rolls were better than others but all in all this was a fabulous place. You might want to skip the Tuna Tataki though, I know i will next time.

If you're looking for delicious sushi rolls at a great price, Matsu Ya in Stevens Point will not leave you disappointed. I highly recommend the Alaskan Roll, Florida Roll and Chicago Roll, but you really can't go wrong with any of the sushi rolls on the menu. They provide great service in an inviting atmosphere that keeps me coming back time and time again.
